Incorporating protective styles into your hair care routine (such as braids, twists, wearing your natural hair), can help you retain length. When done correctly, protective hair styles remove the daily stress and tension from your natural hair, allowing it to breath.
Along with giving your hair periodic breaks from heat and styling, it’s important to maintain it hydrated. Summer activities like lounging by the pool, spending time in the sun and even the humidity can over dry your hair and cause breakage. Hair oils are an easy way to add moisture to your hair. If you have frizzy hair, color treated hair or just really damaged hair from using heat tools, hair oils can add that missing hydration.
Recently I’ve added different oils into my hair care routine and have noticed a higher level of shine and softness. Oils that are high in vitamins and fatty acids can hydrate the hair, keeping it from becoming brittle and breaking off. You can use these oils as scalp treatments (by putting them on before washing your hair, leaving them on for some time then rinsing them off). You can also use them before styling your hair, depending on the level of oiliness your scalp produces. Some of these oils might not work for everyone so test them and find out which one works for you.
- Olive oil: Olive oil is beneficial to the body, and using olive oil on your hair can also have great benefits. Olive oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, specifically oleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid, which are great for the body when consumed. Olive oil for the hair can help with adding moisture, repairing split ends, and frizziness. Use hair oil as a hair mask, mixed with other ingredients (mixed with eggs or other fatty oils) or just as a scalp and hair treatment that you wash off. My favorite olive oil right now is Hollywood Beauty Olive Oil, you can also use super market olive oil that is virgin or extra virgin.
- Moroccon Oil: Moroccon oil contains fatty acids that make it an excellent moisturizer. These oils are great to use as hair mask s or as hair moisturizers in small amounts. With fatty acids and vitamin E this oil promotes hair growth, lubricates hair, and tames frizz. A great oil is the Moroccan Oil Treatment .
- Jojoba Oil: This oil is high in vitamins and minerals (including vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc) that nourish hair. It helps with a dry scalp and stimulates hair growth. It can be used as an oil treatment for 20 minutes then rinsed off, or use it and massage the scalp to stimulate circulation which can help with hair growth. Scalp massages stimulate the blood circulation and should be done often in combination with a deep treatment for maximum results. Use the USDA Organic Jojoba Oil, by Cliganic or NOW Solutions Certified Organic Jojoba Oil.
