Lack of Motivation? Here’s How To Quickly Take Action Towards Achieving Your Goals

5 second rule

One of my favorite things to do when I’m feeling uninspired is to listen to a ted talk, usually I get inspired to take more action in my every daily life. When I feel a lack of motivation or a need for inspiration I listen to a speech to fuel my thoughts and guide my direction. I recently came across a video from Mel Robbins, titled “One of The Best Speeches Ever” and decided to listen in.

Usually these speeches talk about taking direct action, setting goals and being committed to a routine to achieve them. This video was bit different, it began with a story of a woman and her husband and how the opening of their successful restaurants took a wrong turn.  I was expecting her the woman to say, “and that’s how you run a successful business”, but no, she continued her story and everything went downhill for her and her husband. They lost everything, even their kids college funds and she ended up jobless with a drinking problem and a lack of motivation to get out of bed daily.

Immediate Actions That Lead To Results

She then begins to describe how she discovered and implemented the 5 second rule. The 5 second rule, (like a rocket countdown is 5,4,3,2,1 go) involves counting down from 5 to 1 and taking immediate action without overthinking. She states she implemented the 5 second rule to every decision that she knew the action that needed to be taken. Instead of relying on motivation to get her there, she didn’t give herself enough time to overthink and took action. She says in order to get to where you want to be in life and accomplish your goals, you can’t wait on motivation to get you there. Your brain will use the fear of the unknown to keep you from getting things done and if you take any time to think too much about a task you’ll create obstacles that were never there to begin with.

The 5 second rule can be applied to almost anything. I find myself often overthinking about tasks I must accomplish and unconsciously sabotage myself by thinking about how much work it will take to get them done. I would end up not completing them. The 5 second rule requires immediate action, no thoughts, once you count down action must be taken.

From now on, if there is any task that needs to be completed, anything that will create a shift in your life, action must be taken. Immediate action, before your brain plants any self-doubt. Immediate action is the answer to making a change in the direction of your life.
